OWNER BUILDERS
If you are thinking of being an owner builder then there are a few things you will need to obtain before moving forward with your building application. We get asked all the time ‘What do we need to do once we get a design done?’.

Once you have a design done and are ready to submit your design/plans for a building license, then these things need to be organised prior to the submission & must be included as part of the application process.

You will need to

  • Register as an owner builder with the Builders Registration Board
  • Organise a contour site survey
  • Get a copy of a building specification
  • Provide details of the termite treatment company you will be using along with the type of treatment to be used
  • Organise engineers drawings (to be done after a design is finalised)
  • Get a six star energy assessment

In addition to the above, a couple of other things to take into consideration when becoming an owner builder. You may be prohibited by law to sell your home within 3 years of final completion and will be restricted to becoming an owner builder again for 6 years. If in the event you sell your home within 7 years then you are by law to take out indemnity insurance if the value of the build is more than $20,000. Cick on the link below do view the responsibilities for owner builders on the Western Australian Government website.
